The principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) define the vision and values of our team. To have this “JEDI” vision, we share in the values of UCLA in terms of continuously stretch our thinking, have difficult conversations and remain true to our core values.
As an immigrant and now a principal investigator, I fundamentally believe that:
(a) diversity refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance, and is a source of innovative ideas and creative accomplishments;
(b) we must seek to achieve diversity among our trainees and employees, and facilitate people from all backgrounds to perceive that access to the university is possible for talented students, staff, and faculty from all groups; and,
(c) diversity is integral to our achievement of excellence, and can enhance our ability to accomplish our academic mission.
Hence, I commit to recognizing and nurturing merit, talent, and achievement by supporting diversity and promoting equal opportunity in our laboratory.
I also recognize the acute need to remove barriers to the recruitment, retention, and advancement of talented students, faculty, and staff from populations who are currently underrepresented, as well as including them in opportunities at every career stage.
